Chack'n Pop's Japan-Only Famicom Version Escapes Onto Switch 2 and PlayStation 5

Hamster's Console Archives series launches Taito's 1984 Famicom maze-action game Chack'n Pop on Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5 with native English in-game text.

Hamster's expanding Console Archives series has reached another interesting Japanese home-console release with the Famicom conversion of Taito's Chack'n Pop. The 1984 maze-action game arrives October 1 on Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5 for $7.99 or regional equivalent. Players guide Chack'n through mazes to recover hearts stolen by Belugas while dealing with enemies and environmental hazards.

The original Famicom edition never received an international NES release, but there is a convenient historical wrinkle for modern players: its in-game text was already English, so the new Console Archives edition does not require a translation patch or an emergency dictionary beside the controller. Chack'n Pop has been reissued digitally before through Nintendo's Wii and 3DS Virtual Console services, but both storefront ecosystems have since become examples of why preservation cannot simply mean 'it was downloadable once.'

The game itself also has considerable historical interest within Taito's catalogue, predating Bubble Bobble while introducing characters and ideas that would echo through later titles. Home versions appeared on systems including MSX, PC-6001, PC-8801, Sharp X1 and Sega SG-1000. Now the Famicom branch gets another life. Chack'n has spent forty-two years escaping mazes; escaping dead storefronts is merely the latest level.
