Ultra Street Fighter IV Modders Are Giving the 2014 Fighter the Rollback Netcode Capcom Never Did

Community modders behind SF4Enhanced and SFEmbers rebuild Ultra Street Fighter IV's networking on PC with rollback netcode and modern matchmaking infrastructure.

Ultra Street Fighter IV is twelve years old, which in online-fighting-game terms means its netcode has become less a feature and more an archaeological layer. Two community projects are now attempting to modernise the Steam version with rollback networking, improved matchmaking and rebuilt lobby systems. SF4Enhanced, developed by Faabi from earlier SFE work by Anthony Danducci, and SFEmbers from Kabiefox are pursuing broadly similar goals: replacing the game's native delay-based online behaviour with modern rollback techniques while avoiding port-forwarding rituals.

SF4Enhanced has become open source and its current server setup requires newer compatible builds, while SFEmbers has continued receiving fixes for rollback behaviour, reconnection and room management. Early player reaction is promising but not universally glowing. Some experienced fighting-game players have praised the improved feel, while others report unstable or laggy sessions, and confusion between the two similarly timed projects has not helped comparisons.

Encouragingly, the developers are communicating, raising the possibility that ideas could converge rather than producing a VHS-versus-Betamax battle for a twelve-year-old Street Fighter. Street Fighter IV played a huge role in rebuilding competitive fighting games during the late 2000s. The community is now returning the favour by rebuilding Street Fighter IV.
